What happened to - By the people For the people ? First Year Review: Effective Liberalism By Paul Heise - Jan 21st, 2010 at 10:20 am EST After a year in office, Pres. Obama gives
his administration a B+ but others are
disappointed not to find much Change You Can
Believe In or, conversely. too much change
they don't believe in. The Right is painting
the president as a dangerous and even
demonic collectivist while the crusaders of
the Left condemn him as compromising
everything and lacking a liberal core. The
supposedly neutral purveyors of the
conventional wisdom are planting the idea
that Pres. Obama is a growing
disappointment. By James Ryan - Jan 21st, 2010 at 9:37 am EST After seeing NJ and VA elect a Republican Governor and now a Republican Succesor for Kenndy's Senate Seat I fear that the Democrats will loss in 2010 as well as lossing majoirty in House, Seante, Governorship. I feel that there is no point in passing Healthcare now because we know that the Republicans can filubuster the bill. pay back wasted time. By matt evans - Jan 21st, 2010 at 9:31 am EST I dont think congress or the senate should be allowed to leave washington until they pay us back for the wasted time over the last yr.Make them stay until they finish something, they owe the people of this country, they wasted our time and energy for what ? The rich of this country have a financial problem and that gets fixed in a weekend, but poor people are dropping dead from lack of medical care and its not a priority. Now the banks are set to give 150 billion dollars in "bonus money " .Money that we put up to keep the banks from going broke .What did we get for our money? Not a thing. This shows where the priority in washington is.MONEY .money ,money .I am sick from the total lack of leadership this party has. They are so busy trying to be bi-partisan it has clouded their view of what we elected them to do.Bi-partisian is fine if the other guy wants to deal,if not then move on and stick to your guns, thats why you got a majority in the last election and what happened=-wasted.! Now we will pay the piper for our lack of resovle,if you dont stand for your own principals no one will believe you will fight for theirs.Pack your bags washington -when you go home it may be for good. Priority 1 - JOBS!!!! By Democrat in Decatur, GA - Jan 21st, 2010 at 9:22 am EST Millions of people like myself are jobless and some homeless. BRING THE JOBS BACK TO AMERICA!! Jobs like IT jobs, manufacturing and customer service that all went to India, needs to have incentives to come back home. I love Obama and his visions, but the order in which issues are attacked, are not prioritized. He won on the premise that he'll fix the jobs and the economy. But yet jobs are still being outsourced daily by the millions. News flash, if you don't have a job, you don't care about healthcare. But here's the issues. It's a known fact that GOP tactic to flood the market with the unemployed and have hiring freeze around the country, then go on the airways and blame it on the DEMS, will definitely have supporters fall out of love with the Dems. The need for the jobs are here, but if companies start to hire again, then the win will go into the DEMs column, and the GOPs are not going to allow that. Also, it's obvious that the Independents are bandwagoners, a bunch of grouppies that goes wherever the wind blows or whatever party will lie and beg for their votes. They have no backbones, but unfortunately we still need to appeal to those simple minded people. How do we get the owners of the organizations(most are greedy GOP)to start hiring at their companies again? Right now their feet are in our necks! So how do we play will experienced bullies? We have to find some way to work with them. Stop being bull-headed. Energy, Stemcell research and education overhaul are things that can be footnotes or sub-categories of your agenda. Again, if we are hungry, nothing else matters. Focus on the stuff that got DEMS elected and stop the stupid BlueDog(or whatever dog) inner-party bickering in the media. We see that too and the GOPs are coming across more organized. People are over tired of the big egos and the bickering. GET OFF YOUR BUTTS AND DO WHAT YOU WERE ELECTED TO DO!!! DNC AND PRES PLEASE READ By Democrat in Columbus, GA - Jan 21st, 2010 at 5:44 am EST I support this admin my issue is who is running the country its seems republicans are why are dems acting so weak why does it seem we are moving backwards where is that strong leader that we voted into office. I do have a tendency to be optimistic but even you said mr president you have to deal with things as they are when does reality leave and actuality set in as much as i disliked Bushes policy at least we knew what party was in power. Where is the independant obama thats how you started get back to roots use that community org skills to move the debate in your favor. FIGHT FOR US THE REPUBLICANS just want power they have no intention on doing anything to support you they think they look good being defiant If you dont believe me turn on FOX news msnbc cnn look at the smirk on those republican senators and congress faces as they brag about stoping your agenda do what they do but better have tons of pr firms suporting your agenda send buses KEEP IT SIMPLE does not have to be expensive or complex average americans like simple and straight foward they respect that aproach how about lies republicans get away with saying on tv because yall let them this is the reason why your agenda is loosing one day i seen over 100 commercial by conservatives miss representing your agenda and maybe 5 or 6 promoting it saturate the media with positive things your doing in commercials the republicans are doing it with negetive adds your average american is not as smart as you think republicans are capitlizing on ignorance fear anxieties and yall are letting them like you guys are too scared to stand up to them with out all ways back tracking statements theres tons of americans who think you have done WE NEED TO HEAR AND SEE WHAT YOU HAVE DONE WE NEED TO SEE YOU AGGRESIVELY CALL REPUBLICANS OUT AND SPEAK ABOUT HOW THEY ARE FOR THE STATUS QUO STOP LETTING REPUBLICANS DICTATE DEBATE SO what IF YOU GET BLOW BACK FROM REPUBLICANS YOUR GETTING IT ANY WAY the minority party says there speaking for all americans (no there not) refute that false claim we voted dems in dems need to speak for us and say it more often americans are not getting your message because you say one thing dems in the senate say another dems in the house say another proggressive radio says another it so educate us with a simple message we can rally around.LAST BUT NOT LEAST when are you going to stop being so forgiving of the admin that hurt the american people honestly americans (no matter race or party affiliation) are mad we want to see acountability taking the high ground is cute but no one should be above the law. Rahm man heard you was a pitbull step on toes twist arms hell break arms lol get the dems in line with ONE MESSAGE (keep it simple) get them in line pushing back hard on republicans or history is just going to repeat itself. Feel free to email me look 3rd world countries get better eduacation then we do so stop expected us to get it and TELL US WHAT WE NEED TO GET MAKE US GET IT PROFF. PRES. LEADER OF THE FREE WORLD PLEASE!!!!! From here until November it is all about Ethics Reform By Karstar - Jan 21st, 2010 at 5:30 am EST The loss in Mass illustrates the core of the problem. Obama and our fellow Democrats ran on a platform of Ethics. Unfortunately the last year has been crisis control. The one agenda item pushed forward was health care. Health care reform is however a symptom of the disease. The disease is lack of ethics in Washington. Had ethics reform been the priority from day one, the health care bill would have passed easily because it would have lacked the special interests handwriting that is so prevalent. That goes for any other initiative also. Nothing gets accomplished in Washington for the good of the people unless the Democrats decide to lead the charge on Ethics reform. The Massachusetts Election By Frank Libral - Jan 21st, 2010 at 2:39 am EST The Democrats had an exceptionally weak candidate in Massachusetts, but the results call into question their tactical political competence. The party now has less than 10 months to get it right before the midterm elections, when they are in danger of losing more seats in the House and the Senate. It is indisputable that the Republicans have settled on a tactic of obstruction, disinformation and fear-mongering, but it is equally indisputable that the Democrats have not countered it well. WARNING to House Democrats ...DO NOT pass the Senate health insurance reform bill .. By Democrat in Maspeth, NY - Jan 21st, 2010 at 1:09 am EST The Senate health insurance reform bill is " TOXIC WASTE "... It's one of the most ATROCIOUS pieces of Legislation ever WRITTEN.. Should DEMOCRATS in the house of REPRESENTATIVES "ROLL OVER" and RAM this piece of legistlation down the THROATS of the AMERICAN people. Just to give president Barack obama a " HOLLOW " Victory... After the people of MASSACHUSETTS have spoken loud and clear !... After Progressive democrats have also made it clear , we do not want the Senate version of Health insurance Reform to become law. On NOVEMBER 3RD 2010... PROGRESSIVE DEMOCRATS , INDEPENDENTS AND REPUBLICAN VOTERS... Will UNITE in solidarity ... And RAM this piece of legistlation right back up YOUR ASSES !... And send ALL of YOU to the nearest UNEMPLOYMENT LINE !... This is my BOLD , DETERMINED AND DECISIVE (something barack obama has refused to be since becoming president) Prediction for this year... And NANCY PELOSI (Godbless her soul , she is a real trooper)... Will not be SPEAKER of the House come november 4th 2010 !.. One suggestion , Bring back HOWARD DEAN as Chairman of the National Democratic Party... By Democrat in Maspeth, NY - Jan 21st, 2010 at 12:48 am EST I have one suggestion for president Barack Obama.... Put away your differences with HOWARD DEAN... We need HOWARD DEAN back as chairman of the National Democratic Party Get rid of Virginia governor Tim Kayne !... Its been three elections already !... NEW JERSEY ! VIRGINIA and MASSACHUSETTS !... And we are 0 for 3 !.. Tim Kayne has done a desasterous job !... HE NEEDS TO GO !... President Obama NEEDS to re-energize his BASE .... Bring Back HOWARD DEAN or face a BLOODBATH on November 3rd 2010 !... Make them vote no. By matt evans - Jan 21st, 2010 at 12:28 am EST Just watched the Rachel Maddow show and heard the most sane thing yet on this healthcare problem.Just break it down into individual items and force a vote on seperate issues. This does a couple things -first it will identify what is easily possible (pre-existing conditions) easy to pass or they have to explian why not.Same for each item. they will have to say no a thousand times, and their actual position will be seen by the public. we will know who is on what side and on what issue. We will know when they are protecting the insurance industry and when they are fighting for us.If the party wanted to they could limit debate to and do it fast since debate has already been done.It will take longer but the voters will have a clearer picture who is obstructing who and why. Let the republicans have an oposseing bill on every item and vote on it too.But stop talking and backdoor dealing and get on with the voteing Thats why we voted, so they would vote, make them do their job. If we dont like the way people vote we can vote them out .I think the majority still has the power to decide what gets voted on and when unless they gave that responsibility away too.Do your job start voteing. they deserve scott brown By matt evans - Jan 20th, 2010 at 7:07 pm EST Any party that has a super majority and still cant get things passed is in seriuos trouble. This all came about because the leadership bent over to try to get republican support for a democratic plan. They should have stuck to their guns and if the republicans didnt want to go for the ride of improveing the american society then we should have let them walk. This whole matter could have been done in a month.I said months ago the only strategy the republicans had was to stall until it couldnt get done .Mabe now they will see the republican party will not negotiate !. They unlike this party stands behind their platform . I wont bend anymore .none of us should, the party is supposed to fight for our principles not some watered down republican light model of what they think it should be . They had it their way for 8 yrs and this is where it got us .We voted for a change in direction, not an adjustment . So when its time for a vote let scott explian why healthcare is good for his state but not his country,I will tell you why -he has his- he is not worried about you or me or anybody else. I bet they do the same thing with every peice of legislation the democratic party puts forward. Let them just say NO and explian that at vote time.We can atleast say we tried.and this super majority Reqiurment is rediculuose let them fillibuster -then change the bill by two words resubmit and make them do it agian. They will become the party of no if we give them enough rope. The amount of political capital that has been spent and wasted is shamefull. The worst leadership of my time. Massachusetts Now. What's Next? By John D. Tincher - Jan 20th, 2010 at 6:25 pm EST Congratulations to the people of Massachusetts. This is a significant step in the people telling the government, "We will not be your sheep." Martha (or "Marsha" as Pat Kennedy so eloquently put it) Coakley sat on her laurels and was handed an embarrassing defeat. Now, we see finger pointing all over the place from as high as the President's office. Stop. Step back. Let's take an inward look. What has the party done wrong? Maybe instead of calling Republicans and Conservatives demons and casting stones the fault lies within. Perhaps the party, once it has collectively opened its eyes and questioned itself in a serious manner, can learn from the other side(s). Stop blindly following without questioning. Stop the blind worship of certain leaders. They ARE fallible. Listen to the voices of the American people. Health Care. Few people want this mysterious initiative that is being pushed and carried through backroom deals. Listen to the health care professionals. They do not want it. Has anyone bothered to ask them why? They might actually know something about it. Environment and Climate Change. Oil is NOT our enemy. We should find new forms of energy because, as a species and a nation, it is in our nature to be better, always. We have it within us to be independent of the rest of the world for energy. This will likely require deeper investigation into offshore drilling and nuclear power. It can be done in a responsible manner. Global warming IS a joke. This was just released today: http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20100120/ts_afp/unclimatewarmingglaciersindiaipcc_20100120130836 It is truly a noble cause to want to make our environment better. We should always strive to do things better. We can do that without the hysteria though. Immigration. The government is failing on the illegal immigration crackdown. We are indeed a nation of immigrants. Increased funding to Border Patrol is desperately needed. We cannot cast out all the illegals already in the country. It is an act of futility. Amnesty should be granted to those illegal immigrants that have been living in the country for a certain amount of time and have not committed any crimes. There are many jobs in the agriculture sector that rely heavily on illegal immigrants to do the hard work that it takes to harvest the crops. It is a fact. The government should set a date, a line in the sand if you will, and say as of that date, any illegals will be prosecuted and jailed/deported and those caught hiring them will be punished. Also, the mere thought of an illegal receiving Medicare or social security is a disgrace and the office found filing their papers should face punishment. National Security. We are a superpower. We must maintain that position. In today's world there is a significant number of frenemies. Keep them close. We must keep a close eye on China. I do not believe they are the great global superpower others find them to be. There is a huge income disparity cutting their nation in half. Approximately 500 million of their people are farmers without adequate utilities and electricity. Watch them for an implosion as it will have a significant impact on us. Civil Rights. I believe the nation has evolved significantly in the case of civil rights and liberties. So, why is gay marriage such an issue? If two people want a union, let them have it. I am not an expert on the Constitution but, considering some states are allowing it, it must not specify that marriage MUST be man and woman. If I am wrong, please let me know. If the Constitution does prohibit other than man and woman, then an Amendment is now required. Honest/Open Government. I think this health care debacle shows the party leaders are not being "transparent" as the people of the nation expected them to be. It is a shame to let them get away with that. I believe there are some aspects to lawmaking that will require some level of secrecy as it may have an impact on the security of the nation. However, other than to hide the backroom deals and disgraceful payoffs and bribes going on right now, there should be nothing to hide in this health care drive. Economy. The Democratic leaders need to wake up and understand the stimulus package was a travesty. Do NOT do it again. How much sense does it make the bail out the large corporations and the people get nothign from it? Why not take that money and pay off at least a certain amount of peoples' mortgages (those that meet certain qualifications)? That way the people would have received direct benefits, less people would have foreclosed and the money STILL would have made it to the banks. This nation was built upon the little guy. Give tax breaks to small businesses. That is where the jobs will be created. Learn. Listen. Analyze. Think. Instead of listening to guys like Glenn Beck and calling him a "fear-monger" or a "closet fascist", give them a chance. There are good ideas all over the place. You do not have to agree with everything they say. I implore you all to NOT be sheep. It is OK to question and criticize our party leaders. It should be done regularly. Again, I believe Massachusetts just sent a big wake-up call to the nation. The people are unhappy. To hear our Democratic leaders say they are going to continue down the same path and push on with things like the health care bill is just insane. November will see many Democrats lose their seats. One final thing... STOP BLAMING THE LAST ADMINISTRATION! They messed things up. I get it. They are gone. Get over it. Mass. is wrong By Oplis Sloan - Jan 20th, 2010 at 5:49 pm EST People have a right to vote as they wish, and people have a right to criticize that vote....you don't vote to send a message at a time like this. Obama: Image vs. Perception By Democrat in San Francisco, CA - Jan 20th, 2010 at 5:12 pm EST I voted for Obama and have now realized that my support of him has dwindled in the past six months. It all boils down to his image and what the public perceives. People perceive that he is a hard working, serious and capable individual who is doing his best to try to solve the nation's problems of health care reform, the economy, and unemployment. But what people see in his image is a President that has suddenly become secretive in what he is doing. His image comports a politician who has handed over the reins of leadership to Democratic Party big names. In short, he is distant and leaves the big policy duties to these individuals instead of advancing his cause to work with people on both sides of the fence. Of course this is easier said than done when you have the "Party of No" to contend with, but this doesn't mean that you give up and make everything you do partisan in order to push through your agenda. People are no longer connected to the President as they were in the beginning of his term. Health care is being railroaded against the wishes and cries of a majority of Americans. We continue to raise the national deficit by borrowing money to keep us afloat. People are concerned about how government seems to be taking a life of its own and how it is running to the tune of its own whistle. People who supported Obama, those who were not Democrats, are feeling uneasy about this paradigm shift from an open administration that includes the populace to one that has politicians steer our country according to their preconceived agendas on what is right for everyone else. It is evident now that Obama isn't the President of the People as I first hoped, but he is a President of his Party, and that's too bad. Massachusetts By Tim - Jan 20th, 2010 at 3:40 pm EST The loss of Massachusetts can bring us together, it is only one state and only one vote towards health care reform. I think that if we keep pushing reform, it will convince someone to vote for it. How do we do that when mainstream news media like network news is supporting a movement of the ignorant misinformed rich mass called the Tea Party? We have to re- stratergize in order to get people to stay Democrat and vote Democrat. The Tea Party/Baggers is advancing is because they are passing and believing the lies and the scare tactics used by the Republican Party and network news, the GOP's subsidiary to not get health care formed. But, it is more than just policy. President Obama is being treated like an intelligent African American student in a mostly white classroom. Every mistake he makes is a grave one and every achievement he gets is not good enough and underrecognized. I feel like if we let this continue, then we have really spiraled as a country in regards to progress in this country. The GOP and the Tea Party wants to lynch President Obama, we cannot let that happen without a fight. We can lead the way by being pragmatic, realistic, and look at the content of his political character. Yes, he made campaign promises, but to expect that he will do all of them in under a certain time and hold it to his head is not being realistic. In our system of government, it takes a while and the path is taken with compromise and debate, and Obama has been central and supportive of such discussions. Although, I do not think that the way the GOP and the GOP-sponsored Tea Party are really basing their views on President Obama on his policies, but his race. An African American is President of the United States, and they cannot stand for it. And, honestly, denying that this has to do with race is only feeding the monster that is being created. I think that what President Obama should do is acknowledge that they are looking at him through a racist lens, and he needs to crack that lens by acknowledging this reality and repeating the lines of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. that it is about character, not color. He's human, and prone to error, but his race is not his error. People are angry about the state of economy, are afraid of health care reform, and fearing the worse because President Obama is an African- American man in power. I am not afraid of him or his race, and I am not one to scapegoat President Obama simply because of his skin color, in fact, just to reiterate: the messes that Obama is dealing with are messes he did not make, but made by George W. Bush. His economic policies are responsible for the mess we are in, and President Obama should not be penalized for doing the best he can to get us out of it. I do think that there will be economic prosperity with President Obama, but I know it takes time and we have to be patient. People are afraid of health care reform because an African American man in political power is deciding upon such. We live in a racist country, but the only way we can hope to move on is to acknowledge it and focus on the problems at hand that have nothing to do with race. The problems at hand are that our economic recovery is not going as fast as we thought, and that our ways of appealing health care are not working. So we regroup. People are worried about government spending, the government has a duty to help out its constituents in any way it can. Our economy is struggling, and any spending at all I think would stimulate something. We just have to wait. Massachusetts has opened up an interesting opportunity for us. We just have to take it. Let's start cracking that racist lens until its broken! Hittin the Streets( Can you hear me now) By Micheal DeCoria - Jan 20th, 2010 at 3:33 pm EST Hi everyone, Yes it's me to bug you again. I have been away from this site for awhile and I am getting ready for another season of fun. I know that many of you are falling all over yourself about dems loosing a seat in MA, but to be quite honest they deserved to loose it. You cannot take for granted that you will win in an area just becuase it is historically been democrat in that area. The republicans had a good plan and people willing to put in the work, plus as I like to call them fair weather voters or (indepedents) have turned the way of the republican. I would'nt worry though as long as we turn things around we should see them comming back in droves. Well anyway this is where I will plead with you to get started early and hit the election trail, and you will ignore me thinking everthing is in the bag in your district, and all of a sudden you have a big fat consevative republican running things. I am telling you this season it could happen the tea baggers have an ever growing coalition and money is moving like water from the insurance idustry. Don't be like MA get started now get in touch with your freinds and the people you were with during the election. This is going to be a tough season it will take a massive effort, money is nice but feet on the ground is what your district needs. We need execution not excuses this season so HIT THE STREETS. Thank you all, and God Bless. -Micheal The Anti's By Democrat in Davenport, FL - Jan 20th, 2010 at 10:46 am EST The Anti's Are On The Move I have long held the theory that there exists in this country a base seldom discussed. We hear of the Democrat base; the GOP base; the liberal and conservative bases. Voter bases. The base I have in mind involves mostly non-voters. They don’t bother much on going to the polls, but they are vocal. Those who go to town-hall meetings and disrupt belong to this base. Those who strut about with a gun strapped to their body are part of this base. More importantly than anything - this base includes those who will never accept a person of color as “their” president. For reference - let’s call this base the “Anti-Base”. (They are anti-everything crowd. Tea Baggers) Yes, a majority of American voters went to the polls and proudly elected Barack Obama to lead the country. The Anti’s never thought it possible. They really did not stir the pot that much during the campaign. They had faith in folks to vote against the black man. When they awoke to see they had made a mistake, they sat out to bring this non-American; born out of wedlock SOB down. Tea Baggers. Look at them. White as freshly fallen snow. A pitiful group. Not well informed. For example, there was the middle aged lady in Virginia I saw interviewed. She had a job as did her husband. They were covered by employer insurance plans and “so happy” with their insurance. When asked what those hard-working people who had been laid off and lost insurance were to do - “well they can just go to the ER”. replied the lady. When it was suggested that someone has to pay those bills she insisted that was not true. “Hospitals have that built in”. Well, I did say the Anti’s are not well informed. There is not one single act or action President Obama can take without the Anti’s jumping up and down in protest. Following the lead of their guru - Rush - they accuse the president of using Haiti for personal glory. The media laps up the sour milk left by the Anti’s. They are now beginning to accuse the president of “not explaining things well”. Health care? Those with a 6th grade reading ability could determine every detail in about 3 hours. Are we so used to seeing and “hearing” George Bush that we can not understand intelligent speakers? Yesterday I threw a stone myself. I believe an outstanding American, David Axelrod, is not the person for the position he holds. Yep, the buck stops with the president. David was a close, personal friend, and should so remain. It is not something horrible for there to be a shakeup in any organization - particularly when the organization is just getting off the ground. Mr. President, shake up the West Wing. David is not the best senior advisor for you - and Rahm is not the person for Chief of Staff. Fire and hire Mr.President - and show the same fire you did during the campaign. Otherwise the Anti’s will win. Anti’s win = American loss. Robert Boseley Career Politicans are an Amorphous Mass By Democrat in Delray Beach, FL - Jan 20th, 2010 at 10:15 am EST It is unlikely that the Founding Fathers could envision an elected pool of career politicans who view their positions as jobs and not service to the people. Most who follow politics agree that most politicans are primarily concerned about re-election. Exclusive of the reason an elected Representative or Senator justifies his/her need to be in Congress for the rest of their life the fact is that the effectiveness of a career politican ends with election. During the campaign a candidate may raise some really swell argruments that the electorate agrees with and carries into the voting booth as a reason to support that candidate. Regretfully once in the District of Compromise all bets are off. The Party Leaders carefully explain the rules of the road to the newbies and especially the part about what happens if you stray from the message. New arrivals soon realize that you don't get to be a decider until it is clear you are in the Congress to stay. After about 20 minutes in office the newly minted People's Choice learns about lobbyists and re-election. At this point the contituency changes. It is time to get on the tenure train. The only way the American people will ever enjoy the best representation possible is if we demand term limits of two (2) for the Senate and three (3) for the House and publically funded election campaigns. Our Senators and Representatives are in office too long and require too much money to keep running. As a result they become deeply indebted to those who support their re-election and become an amorphous mass of indecision and procrastination while folks die in stupid wars and for the lack of health care. |
